Fed Lowers Interest Rates for Second Instance This Calendar Year During Financial Instability

The US central bank cut interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second reduction this year during economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.

Decision Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank

The move to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates despite persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Changes

In a announcement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement reads. “Price increases has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The continuing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.

Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions

The Fed typically studies labor statistics to determine employment trends, such as the count of new jobs added to the market and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in August.

The number of positions added to the market in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Decline

Though the bureau was set to publish last month’s job market report in early October, it halted its publication once the shutdown began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported earlier this month that the private sector eliminated 32,000 positions in last month, a indication that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said recently, a trend he had previously said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Increase

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still released its price statistics for September that showed that prices are rising, albeit gradually. Prices rose three percent over the last year, the highest since January. In spring, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
